Start with the scope of your home
For homes in Phoenix, Mesa, Chandler, Gilbert, and Scottsdale, start by deciding whether you want to clean one occupied room or improve air circulation through the whole home. Both a portable purifier and an appropriately designed central filter can help reduce indoor particle exposure. Neither guarantees protection from Valley fever.
CDC includes indoor air filtration among its measures to reduce exposure. Filtration is not a guarantee against infection. CDC Valley fever prevention
What Maricopa County's numbers actually show
The county's July 31, 2026 update lists 4,833 reported cases from January through July 2026, compared with 5,598 in the same months of 2025. Both years are preliminary. This is a high-burden area, but those figures do not support saying that cases are currently surging. Use the county's own series consistently when comparing years. Maricopa County Valley fever data
County totals describe reported illness among residents. They cannot tell you whether your yard contains the fungus or where any individual was exposed. A Phoenix mailing address, a dusty window sill, and a reported county case are different kinds of information.

A bedroom-first option for renters and smaller budgets
For an illustrative 12-by-15-foot bedroom, the floor area is 180 square feet. AHAM's general starting rule calls for a smoke CADR of at least two-thirds of that area: 120 cubic feet per minute for a standard-height room. Allow additional capacity for high ceilings or operation below maximum speed. This sizing rule is not a Valley fever prevention threshold. AHAM sizing guidance
A Levoit Core 300-P lists 143 CFM CADR; a Coway Airmega 100 lists 108 CFM smoke CADR. On those published figures, the Levoit is the more suitable starting comparison for this particular 180-square-foot example, while the Coway fits a smaller room. The manufacturers use different CADR descriptions, so check the exact model's smoke rating before purchasing. Core 300-P specifications, Airmega 100 specifications
Choose a location with clear intake and outlet space. Compare replacement-filter expense and noise at the setting you will use overnight. One small device in a hallway should not be assumed to clean every closed bedroom.

Whole-home filtration when your AC already works
Ask an HVAC technician whether your current filter slot, blower, and return-air arrangement can support MERV 13. Request a price for a compatible filter upgrade separately from a new media cabinet or any duct work. CDC's general filtration guidance emphasizes correct filter fit, minimizing bypass, and maintained equipment. CDC air-cleanliness guidance
For a home where cooling performance is satisfactory, the useful questions are about particle filtration and circulation:
- What filter is installed now, and is air slipping around its edges?
- Will the proposed filter preserve the airflow the equipment requires?
- How will the fan operate between heating or cooling cycles?
- Which rooms have return-air paths when their doors are closed?
- What will filters and any additional fan runtime cost over a year?
Replacing a functioning AC is not the automatic next step. A professional assessment should establish what the existing equipment can do first.

Dusty days and the limits of a purifier's display
Maricopa County recommends remaining inside with windows closed during dusty, windy conditions. For travel through dust, it advises closed vehicle windows and recirculating air when available. Home filtration cannot protect you during an outdoor exposure. County prevention advice
A consumer particle sensor does not identify the Valley fever fungus. Treat its display as information about what the device measures, not as clearance to declare the room free of infectious spores. Our filtration evidence and buying guide explains the distinction between capturing particles and preventing illness.

Compare a purchase with a professional assessment
| Your situation | First comparison | What to confirm |
|---|---|---|
| Renting or prioritizing one bedroom | Correctly sized room purifier | CADR, noise, filter availability, seller's current price |
| Several rooms and working central AC | Existing-system filtration assessment | Compatible MERV rating, airflow, filter seal, runtime |
| Persistent dust entry or weak room airflow | Filtration plus duct/air-path diagnosis | Evidence for each repair and an itemized installed quote |
Request indoor-air-quality help in Arizona. Include your city and the rooms you want to address. A request is not an appointment; the provider confirms availability and price. For purifier shopping, follow the manufacturer links above and compare the exact model and included filter. These are ordinary product references, not claims of disease-prevention testing.
If you have symptoms
Discuss persistent cough, fever, fatigue, or breathing symptoms with a healthcare professional and mention recent dust exposure and where you have traveled. Seek urgent care for severe breathing difficulty. An air purifier cannot diagnose or treat Valley fever. CDC clinical information
