Up to $3,000 for qualifying HVAC.

SMUD lists $3,000 for a variable-stage gas-to-electric heat-pump conversion, $2,000 for qualifying two-stage conversions, and $1,000 for qualifying multi-stage electric-to-electric upgrades. Match the offer to the system being replaced.

A utility program with contractor requirements.

This guide covers SMUD’s offer, not all Sacramento-area utility customers. Confirm your service account and property with SMUD. Funding must be available, and a participating SMUD Contractor Network installer must submit the rebate.

Check the exact equipment model.

SMUD requires a qualifying two-stage heat pump with at least 15.2 SEER2, or qualifying variable-stage equipment. Single-stage systems are not eligible. Have the contractor identify the proposed model and its rebate category before you accept the quote.

Who applies, and who gets paid?

Your participating contractor provides the rebate application for your signature and submits it. Some contractors offer the amount upfront and collect the rebate later. Confirm the arrangement in writing so the advertised discount and the payment you owe are clear.

The electrical bonus has separate conditions.

SMUD’s Go Electric offer requires replacing an existing gas furnace or gas water heater with a qualifying heat pump. It lists eligible circuit and sub-panel incentives within a total limit of $2,000. A panel-plus-circuit project must meet the program’s all-electric-ready requirements.

A panel replacement alone should not be assumed eligible. Ask the contractor to explain the proposed electrical scope, qualifying conversion, and the total approved bonus.

Considering insulation or water heating too?

SMUD’s Home Performance Program combines several upgrade categories. Its official page lists separate heating-and-cooling, water-heating, seal-and-insulate, and electrical packages. Ask a participating contractor which combination fits the property and current funding.

The contractor is responsible for permits and HERS testing where required. Confirm who receives the rebate payment before work starts and keep the application reference for tracking.

Compare the complete installation proposal.

Use the same requested scope when asking for quotes. Have each proposal show equipment, installation, duct or electrical changes, permits, and each incentive separately. Treat additional advertised programs as unconfirmed until the responsible administrator verifies eligibility and funding. Comparing the final amount you pay is more useful than comparing headline rebate totals.

Common question

Apply through the official program.

Temperaly is an independent HVAC inquiry service. A request here does not apply for a rebate, reserve funding, establish eligibility, or book a program-approved installer. Use the official program link below for an application or program questions. Share income documents only through the administrator’s requested process.
