Three standard rebate categories.
Mass Save lists whole-home rebates of $2,650 per ton, capped at $8,500; partial-home rebates of $1,125 per ton, also capped at $8,500; and basic rebates of $250 per ton, capped at $2,500. These are alternative project categories, not three discounts to add together.

Match the project to the right category.
Whole-home projects use heat pumps as the sole heating and cooling system and require sufficient weatherization before installation. Partial-home projects supplement existing heating; retained fossil-fuel zones generally need qualifying integrated controls. Basic rebates cover situations including replacement heat pumps, cooling replacements, and previously unconditioned spaces. Sponsor-account and equipment rules apply.

Use an eligible installer and calendar.
The standard offer requires a Heat Pump Installer Network contractor and qualifying cold-climate equipment. For 2026 installations, applications must arrive by February 28, 2027. Ask the installer to identify the eligible electric or gas sponsor account and show the matched system on the qualified product list.

Income qualification can change the offer.
Mass Save lists enhanced air-source heat-pump rebates up to $16,000. Verify income eligibility first and complete weatherization recommended during the Home Energy Assessment before claiming the enhanced rebate. The offer uses a participating electric-sponsor account and applies to eligible projects replacing or supplementing oil, propane, or electric resistance heating. It is not a universal higher rebate for every household.
Use the enhanced-program page for its separate building, equipment, and application rules. Have the administrator confirm the approved amount before treating it as part of your installation budget.

Make competing quotes comparable.
Ask each installer to write down the project category, eligible system capacity, gross installed price, and expected rebate as separate items. If one proposal keeps your boiler and another removes it, compare the operating plan as well as the price.
For a whole-home proposal, ask who will coordinate weatherization and when it will finish. For a partial-home proposal, ask how the controls will choose between the two heating systems. Keep written answers with the equipment schedule and contract.
Use this guide to prepare, then confirm.
