Two pathways, different limits.

Indiana’s HEAR page lists up to $8,000 for an eligible heat pump. Its $14,000 total limit includes other measures. This published cap does not resolve whether your existing heating system qualifies under current rules.

Applications open; confirm the project rules.

Indiana Energy Saver advertises open applications through one process for HOMES and HEAR. Approved rebates are discounts on eligible products and installation by a qualified contractor. Begin through the official program rather than assuming a completed purchase will be reimbursed.

An important equipment-rule discrepancy.

The Indiana HEAR benefits page still says existing electric-equipment replacements are not permitted. That conflicts with DOE’s newer electric-to-electric guidance. We cannot determine your project’s eligibility from these conflicting pages. Ask Indiana Energy Saver for written confirmation of the rule and reservation date that apply before buying equipment.

What changed in federal guidance.

DOE’s May 29, 2026 notice removes fuel-switching allowances from the state HEEHR equipment pathway and permits efficient electric-to-electric upgrades. It also addresses weatherization and existing approved reservations. Indiana must confirm its implementation and your project’s treatment.

HOMES evaluates the entire project.

For single-family homes below 80% AMI, Indiana lists HOMES limits of $12,000 for 20%–34% modeled savings and $18,000 for at least 35%, subject to eligible project cost. At or above 80% AMI, the corresponding caps are $2,000 and $4,000, with a 50% cost limit.

These are whole-project amounts, not flat heat-pump rebates. Use the energy assessment to establish the eligible scope and expected savings before deciding whether the project fits your budget.

Prepare the application documents.

The household guide lists ownership records and income evidence. Income verification may use a qualifying benefit letter or documentation for adult household members’ income sources. Utility usage records may also be requested.

A useful preparation step is to make a document checklist without sending anything yet: property record, household income evidence, utility history, and existing equipment details. Follow the official portal’s instructions for what to upload.

Before signing an installation contract.

Request a written breakdown of the approved scope, rebate amount, remaining cost, and who submits the claim. If the equipment-rule question is still unresolved, keep it visible in the proposal and ask for an answer from the administrator. A headline maximum is not a commitment to pay for your installation.

Common question

Apply through the official program.

Temperaly is an independent HVAC inquiry service. A request here does not apply for a rebate, reserve funding, establish eligibility, or book a program-approved installer. Use the official program link below for an application or program questions. Share income documents only through the administrator’s requested process.
